What is Body Piercing?
Body piercing is an invasive procedure with some risks, including allergic reaction, infection, excessive scarring as well as rejection. Careful aftercare is critical to minimize the likelihood of encountering serious problems.
You must wash your hands thoroughly prior to cleaning your piercing. Allow clean water to run over the piercing to soften and wash away some of the dry discharge around the jewelry. Remove the remaining discharge with a cotton tip. Soak with saline solution by inverting a cup of warm saline solution over the area to form a vacuum.
Avoid using harsh soaps, or soaps with dyes, fragrances, or triclosan. A soap product is usually not necessary however if you like to use soap, use a mild liquid anti-microbial soap and then thoroughly rinse with clean water.
It is not necessary to rotate the jewelry through the piercing.
Dry by gently patting with clean, disposable paper products. Do not use cloth towels as they can harbor bacteria and cause infections.
Don’t over-clean your piercing as this will irritate the area and cause swelling.
For the first two weeks, take showers instead of baths. Sitting in a bath tub could introduce bacteria or harsh soaps into the piercing causing irritation or infection.
Do not use any ointments or creams.
Jewelry can typically be changed after a full month or two of healing. Each body is unique and healing times vary considerably.
